South Korea Puts $10.3 Billion into Physical AI

Do you think working on technology is enough to stay ahead? Of course not. As AI moves beyond software, the biggest challenge is the money that is needed to deploy it at a large scale.

South Korea is taking a big step toward Physical AI. They just want to speed up its use in industries. For that, two government bodies, the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, said that they will hand out about 16 trillion won in policy financing this year alone. This is close to $10.3 billion. What do you think is the goal? They just want to help grow six industries with the use of AI. These industries are robotics, future vehicles, defense, semiconductors, secondary batteries, and AI itself. You must be thinking about how this is going to help companies. Well, the government has plans to support companies through loans and other financial support. This is a great initiative and will benefit companies a lot.

What Was Announced

A meeting was held at the headquarters of the Korea Development Bank in Seoul. This news came out of that meeting. Some of the country’s biggest manufacturers also participated in it. LS Cable & System, CJ Logistics, Doosan Robotics, and Hyundai Mobis are among the top ones. Other than those manufacturers, banks (KDB, KB Kookmin Bank, and Morgan Stanley) and government officials also participated in it.

The money will move through the M.AX Frontier Project. M.AX basically stands for “Manufacturing AI Transformation.” This project is being run under South Korea’s National Growth Fund. The idea here is super simple. The Ministry provides support to the companies in order to adopt new technology. Whereas the Financial Services Commission provides real capital that is required for those major investments.

The very first project that’s approved under this program is LS Cable & System. The company is spending around 160 billion won for the sake of expanding its factory in Donghae. This factory is where extra-high-voltage subsea cables are built as well as tested. It is worth noting that the National Growth Fund is offering a whopping 80 billion won loan to the company. Well, that’s definitely a huge amount and will prove to be super beneficial for the company. And the best part is that this loan is offered at a low interest rate over 10 years.

FSC Chairman Lee Eog-weon described the fund as a strong way to actually put the physical AI plan into action. Trade Minister Kim Jung-kwan added that this kind of financing helps cover big infrastructure costs that even large companies often struggle to handle on their own.

Why This Program?

M.AX isn’t something brand new. It has, in fact, grown from a manufacturing AI alliance that was started by the ministry back in September 2025. As per media reports, the ministry has set aside around 700 billion won for M.AX for the year 2026. And along with that, the major goal of the ministry is to build 500 AI-powered factories by 2030.

This new funding announcement takes that plan a step further. Rather than helping companies adopt new technology, the government is now actually spending ample amounts of money on physical projects. These projects include cable factories and robotics production lines, along with networks of sensors. It is worth noting that such projects pose a greater risk than typical software projects. Wondering why? Well, that’s because these projects require heavy construction and physical equipment.

Why This Matters for Companies Working in AI

This move matters the most for businesses that build things like robotics or automated inspection systems. Well, that’s because for them, what matters is how the money works, rather than just how much money is being offered. When companies are offered cheaper and long-term loans, the idea of starting bigger automation and inspection projects becomes way more realistic for them. However, otherwise, these projects prove to be super costly and impossible for the companies to even initiate. 

Government-backed programs like this one also tend to favor companies that can handle a project from start to finish, building it, deploying it, and maintaining it, rather than companies that only show strong results in small tests or demos.

The LS Cable project gives a good example of what this looks like in practice. The company plans to use AI to check the quality of its subsea cables during production. These cables need to stay completely sealed and insulated, even while sitting under constant water pressure, which makes this a tough, high-stakes environment for AI systems that need to detect defects and combine data from multiple sensors.

What to Watch Next

There are plenty of other names that attended this meeting. They can be next in line for National Growth Fund support. These manufacturers include CJ Logistics, Isu Petasys, Daesung Hi-Tech, Doosan Robotics, Wonik Robotics, Hyundai Mobis, LX Semicon, and Magnachip Semiconductor. 

Will it be so straightforward to get the government funding? Of course not. In the future, it will be worth watching whether the M.AX Alliance sets any technical standards or rules for projects. If they set their rules, it will decide which type of data those companies will be allowed to collect. It will also decide how these companies are going to test their AI systems.
