A North Carolina sheriff just introduced a humanoid robot that can help law enforcement in hostage negotiations or crime scene investigations in the near future.
Humanoid robots are not limited to factories or sci-fi movies only. Nowadays, you can see these robots in hospitals and warehouses, etc. And in the near future, these humanoids will be assisting law enforcement in emergency situations as well. Agencies around the world are exploring how they can use AI and robots for dangerous tasks in order to keep human workers safe from the risks involved. And that’s exactly what Kimbrough demonstrated.
Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough introduced the robot during a public demonstration. During this demo, Bobby pushed the robot, and the robot was seen maintaining its balance on its own. Moreover, the robot responded to commands, it walked, and even performed dance moves. The robot’s performance quickly gained lots of attention online. However, the officials emphasized that the real purpose of this robot is to improve officer safety in dangerous situations.
“We can send the humanoid into that same situation and accomplish the same thing: hostage negotiations, breach the door, go inside the house, do all the talking and recording. I can program it to do whatever I want it to do, hit buttons. As you saw, it started fighting, started dancing, and it talks. Any motion I want it to do, I can program it to do,” said Bobby Kimbrough.
This robot can help in investigations, too. Wondering how? Well, this robot can create detailed 3D maps of crime scenes as well as large public events. This type of digital reconstruction can help investigators preserve evidence in a much better way. Plus, this can also help them improve documentation during criminal cases.
The project is being explored through a collaboration between the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Artificial Intelligence Robotics Arts Research and Development. This partnership is evaluating how advanced robotics and artificial intelligence could be used in public safety and emergency response.
This robot is valued at approximately $75,000. And it is worth noting that currently the sheriff’s office doesn’t own the robot. Moreover, the officials haven’t even announced a timeline for purchasing one either.
For now, the robot is still in the demonstration phase. However, it definitely shows how quickly robots are becoming part of real-world public safety applications. As per the officials, deploying humanoid robots for dangerous police tasks can significantly reduce the risk that is otherwise posed to the officers. The North Carolina demonstration offers a glimpse of future policing. Whether these robots become standard equipment for police or are deployed just for specific missions, one thing is for sure: AI and robotics are changing the way emergency responders approach some of their most challenging situations.
