Are robots becoming a threat to our jobs? Though these robots are made to help humans, are they now trying to slowly replace us completely? One such scenario is being seen in Detroit, where General Motors has laid off more than 1,000 workers at its Factory Zero plant. And at the same time, the company has also introduced about 50 robots, which are also known as cobots. This move has sparked concern among workers as well as labor unions. And that’s because they’re worried that this automation could gradually replace more and more human jobs in the automotive industry in the near future. 

Factory Zero is one of GM’s most important manufacturing facilities. The plant produces several electric vehicles (EVs), including electric trucks and SUVs. The company says the robots are being used to help workers perform physically demanding tasks and improve safety and efficiency on the assembly line.

Why is GM Adding Robots?

As per General Motors, using robots is a major step towards making manufacturing operations modern and efficient. The company is, in fact, installing these cobots, aka collaborative robots, in several other factories in order to bring more advanced technology into production. According to GM, these robots are not designed to replace humans. Rather, these are introduced to work alongside humans. 

Company spokesperson Kevin Kelly said that robots make workplace safety and ergonomics better, and they also help keep production flexible and competitive. Some of these robots are used to attach vehicle body panels and handle repetitive assembly work. As per manufacturing experts, the reason why these cobots are becoming common is that they perform repetitive tasks way more efficiently and precisely. Not only this, but using these robots also helps businesses improve productivity and reduce costs. And all of this, of course, means a significant rise in profit. 

Workers and Unions Push Back

This move by General Motors has surely come with a lot of debate and some serious concerns. Even though GM tried to explain everything, workers and labour unions are not quite convinced. United Auto Workers (UAW), which represents many GM employees, has strongly criticized the move. Union leaders believe that the company is actually trying to replace human workers with these machines. According to them, laying off 1,000-plus workers is not something they should ignore. And that too, when 50 new robots are introduced. 

Some union representatives have even raised concerns about the safety of human staff. They believe that it’s not safe for humans to work alongside robots on a factory floor. According to reports, local union officials have filed grievances over the introduction of the robots. GM, as we all know, is a profitable company. In fact, reports show that the automaker earned billions of dollars in profit during the first quarter of 2026. Hence, local union officials as well as critics argue that the company was supposed to invest more in workers rather than simply laying them off. 

EV Market Challenges Behind the Decision

GM’s decision comes at a difficult time for the electric vehicle market. Although you might have seen that EV sales are increasing in many regions. However, the demand didn’t increase as much as it was expected by some automakers. There are many manufacturers that have brought changes to their production plans and even delayed EV projects. Some of them have even reduced investments because the adoption rate was way less than what they expected.  

Factory Zero has also seen production pauses in recent years. And the reason why GM made these changes was to match production with customer demand. Industry analysts believe that the company is trying very hard to balance its long-term EV goals and short-term financial realities. During the current EV market situation, using robots might help GM reduce costs and improve efficiency.

For now, General Motors insists that they are using robots just to help workers and improve manufacturing operations. However, the fact that they laid off more than 1,000 workers shows quite the opposite. And that’s actually something former workers and union leaders are really worried about.
