TOKYO — Renesas Electronics Corp. announced it has opened a Physical AI & Robotics Lab in Beijing where customers can demonstrate, validate and jointly develop robot systems using the company’s processors, sensors, actuation, power-management products and software. 

A bill of materials is the complete list of components needed to manufacture a finished product. The percentages are Renesas estimates of how much of a humanoid robot its portfolio could supply, not documented shares of components sold for robots currently in production. 

In its announcement, Renesas said its portfolio can address about 30% of a humanoid robot’s bill of materials.  

The company sees this an opportunity to expand that coverage to 70%, according to Ivo Marocco, vice president and head of UX, who pointed to its work in control, power, sensing, AI and software. 

Renesas did not specify a timeline on when it expects to reach 70% coverage, which product gaps would have to be filled or whether products included in its current 30% estimate have secured design wins with humanoid robot manufacturers. 

The Beijing facility is a validation and co-development site, not a manufacturing plant. Renesas described it as a hub intended to move its physical AI work from proof of concept toward deployment at scale. Its work will cover hardware, software, AI modeling, control, power, sensing and system-level verification. 

The opening follows Renesas’ creation of a Physical AI Division on July 1. Yvonne Liu, vice president and president of Renesas China, said the lab will work with customers, ecosystem partners, universities and startups. 

Renesas cited China’s customer base and component supply chain as reasons for locating the facility in Beijing. The company did not provide details such as address, floor space, staffing level etc., also if customers or robot manufacturers that will use the lab. 

Renesas has not said when the first customer project will begin, which humanoid robot programs its components are being designed into or how progress toward 70% coverage will be measured. Until those details are disclosed, the figure remains a stated portfolio opportunity rather than a documented commercial result.
