DJI to Expand ROMO Robot Vacuum Line, Add Offline Privacy Mode

The new feature keeps navigation data on the device and allows cleaning operations to continue without an internet connection.

SHENZHEN, China – DJI has launched an offline privacy mode called Local Data Mode for its new robot vacuum cleaner ROMO 2 to enable the devices to operate in homes and avoid obstacles without transmitting any mapping data to cloud servers.

According to the manufacturer's announcement on Oct. 29, the feature is available for ROMO 2 with a firmware update. When used, it cuts the link between the DJI Home app and the Internet, storing all the maps, pictures, and other navigation data locally.

DJI claims that the robots will continue cleaning and avoiding obstacles as well as navigating to their charging dock regardless of whether they have the Internet access or not. Also, the user will be able to control the robot and set up cleaning sessions without the Internet.

At first, the system requires an Internet connection to make the map of the home. Later, all the data related to navigation and obstacle detection is stored and analyzed by the device itself, according to the manufacturer.

The company introduced ROMO 2 in September, featuring cameras and LiDAR sensors to navigate rooms and detect obstacles.

In addition, DJI provides the user with an opportunity to disable obstacle photo uploading, delete stored images and disable camera functionality. The privacy system of DJI includes the end-to-end encryption in case the robot operates via the Internet connection.

The robots from ROMO range have undergone independent cybersecurity assessments, including testing by TÜV SÜD and certification through UL Solutions. DJI does not publish independent test results proving the effectiveness of the offline mode.
