About the R1 (Lunar Rover)

GITAI R1 is a four-wheeled lunar rover with dual 1.5-meter robotic arms, developed by GITAI in partnership with JAXA. In December 2021/February 2022, it successfully completed technology demonstrations at JAXA's Sagamihara mock lunar surface facility — driving over rocks, climbing 15–20° slopes, assembling a solar-panel base structure, and collecting soil samples, controlled via VR teleoperation. It has since been succeeded by the R1.5 model, GITAI's current commercially marketed lunar rover.
